Jamil Amirov (born 3 May 1957 in Baku) comes from a famous musical family. He is the son of Azerbaijan's classical composer Fikret Amirov and the grandson of Meshedi Jamil Amirov, a famous “khanande” (mugam singer) from Shusha who composed and played tar. From 1975 to 1980 he studied at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory in the composition class of Prof. Jevdet Gadjiev. From 1978 he was the solist of the State chamber orchestra of Azerbaijan. From 1981 he was a member of the SK in the USSR. İn the early 1980s he continued his study of composition with Gadjiev as assistant-trainee, resulting in a triumph in the All-Union competition for young composers, with new symphonic works and through comprehension of the music of Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Sergei Prokoviev and Dmitri Shostakovich.
